Evaluations for Specialist location
Evaluations of shoots
Horizontal
For my horizontal shoot I wanted to focus on objects adn surfaces that count be interpreted as horizontal with an action. In some images I held my hand in a horizontal position that created horizontal shadows. I shot these images in black and white and edited them so that they would have high contrast and therefore a stronger and sharper image.
Vertical
For my second shoot which was vertical I wanted to do something different to my first shoot to add variety within my images. I made a cylinder tube shape with vertical arrow cut outs. I then took images of my surroundings from within the cut out shapes. This allowed only the parts of surroundings that I wanted to be visible on the image.
Paper
I folded a piece of paper in half for this shoot andput it againt various different leaves and plants to show the contrast within the blank empty space and the complex details of the other half of the paper which contained the plants. In some images I took photos of the plants overlapping the paper, breaking the central line of the image.
Square
I wanted to conceptually shoot my images for square. When I think of a square I often think of small spaces which can make someone feel trapped. I then found see through boxes of different sizes which I then stuck different body parts into. I took photos of the body parts looking squished and deformed within the box. I also took some images of a whole body squeezed into the box whilst sat in the middle of a busy town centre, this was to portray how someone could be feeling trapped and disfigured whilst everyone else just goes about there day like normal.
Circle
For my circle shoot I wanted to do something similiar to what I did in my vertical shoot. I took an object that had a circular cut out shape within it and took photos in different surroundings through it. I used flash in some images to create reflections and highlight spots through the object, this gave the images a spooky and sci-fi feel to them which I really enjoyed creating. Some of my images are abstract with the main focal point unknown and blurred, this creates a visually interesting.
Primal mountain
We used tinfoil and created points within them so when shot correctly with external flash, the issusion can be given that the tinfoil actually is a mountain. I shot the images outside with a clear background to give the illusion of a plain background which is the sky. In the future, I would change the surroundings that I took my images in and make them slightly more interesting to look at, maybe by changing the shape of the tinfoil.
Primal scream
The aim within these images was to capture a movement of movement in anger. I really wanted to capture the amount of anger and craziness within my images. I shot some images from different angles such as from the mouth pointing upwards, close up portrait and some from above. The images in black and white with high contrast create an intense image which I feel makes it seem as though the image is actually screaming at you. This makes the photographs feel more personal to the viewers.
Wrap
I wrapped a few different objects in a few different things for this shoot. Firstly, I wrapped my camera in clingfilm, I did this because the camera has an interesting shape, the fact that is wrapped up and only parts of the camera are visible within my images, contradicts the fact that the camera is usually whata is used to take the images, however in this instance it is the main subject. For my second part of my shoot I used a water bottle, at first I wrapped it in canvas material and string which showed the shape of the bottle but not what it actually contained, these leaves the possibilities of the image up to the imagination. I then wanted to thing of the word ‘wrap’ more conceptually, so I began to poke safety pins into the water bottle. The bottle was covered and physically wrapped with pins so it had a cover on the outside however if you looked inside the bottole, you would find that there was multiple needles sticking everywhere throughout the bottle. For my third part of ‘wrap’, I wrapped string around my models face. Although the model wasn’t completely wrapped, the string created a sense of being trapped and wrapped in your own emotions. I focused on getting the emotion conveyed through the eyes within the images which I think I managed to achieve.
Surfaces
For surfaces shoot I aimed to think about the title ‘surfaces’ more conceptually and wanted to create a story within my series of images. I started to think of ‘surfaces’ ans being on the edge or near the top of something. Eg; near the surface of the sea-barely visible but on the surface. I also thought of surfaces in the way as it is connected to emotions, being on the breaking edge and all of your emotions coming to the surface. I decided to capture the moments of my model in a bath, with the subtleness of self reflection and also self loathing. I captured some images of the models face coming to the surface of the water whilst creating facial expressions that expose some emotions. I also took some images of my model in the bath with a t-shirt on that has been soaked in the water. The wet t shirt sticks to the skin and creates another ‘surface’ on top of the models skin already. I also wanted to capture him ripping the t-shirt off of himself which symbolises the uncovering of layers and different ‘surfaces’.
I think this was successful as I have a few interesting images. I edited the images to have darker shadows, a bit lower exposure and a few refined details with slightly higher exposure. These few changes make a massive amount of difference within the images and created a stripped back detailed image.
Flash on location
My aim on the shoot for flash on location was to create abstract images that are very interesting to lookout, even if the main subject of them aren’t clear. We decided to use a grey sheet for our images and first did a shoot in the studio. We scrunched the sheet up into a ball, spread it out thin, twisted it, threw it and moved it about vigurouslsy to get some great movement images of the sheet. These images were very successful as they turned out to be abstract and some great shapes were made with the sheet. We then took the camera outside and took some similar photos again walls and a background of the sky and some trees.
